Hauntingly beautiful
I have read many books in my life but none have come close to what I felt when I completed reading this book. This book introduces Afghanistan as it once was and what it is today. Yet it is not the story of Afghanistan but of two boys, best friends, from two different sides of the fence, Amir and Hassan. Hussien has found the best element of description to keep the reader wanting more and more, he captured the human element.. The introduction, the first sentence `I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975'. And you'd think.. what has this man done to feel so fragile.. so damned. This human element haunted me and left me absolutely numb and at times in tears. We read stories everyday and we learn a few things from them.. We all live our lives complaining how unfair it is. The ever-so-real characters didn't think life was unfair but lived their lives defying it. Hussien recites a gripping tale of Amir's tormented soul and his search for redemption. A ravishing book about the lives of Amir and Hassan. The characters are so real that it is indeed difficult to differentiate this story from a memoir. A great read; with characters that you'd think of, and remember days, months and even years after.
