Pleasant, yes. Great? well, no. It amazes me how many people go bats**t over this little book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this read. I liked the touching portrayal of a teen with this unfamiliar (at least, for me) condition. It is very well done for what it is. But can I say this is a great read that left me thinking about life and all its complexities bringing on soulful musings? No. A flat-out no. It makes me ask the question--What has happened to our standards as readers today? I mean, Faulkner is great. Steinbeck is great. Mark Haddon? Again, I did enjoy this interesting portrayal. But one read I was deeply moved by and which I feel merits high marks is the little known, "SIMON LAZARUS". Si is a very smart,deep-thinking older teen on an unexpected path to initiation. Worth reading. I mean it.
