John Grisham on vacation John Grisham is in low-energy mode these days and while this newest poses as a thriller, it's more a what-I-did-on-my-summer-vacation essay. Grisham supplies lots of spy hardware and mean-as-snakes international assassins, but it's all told on automatic... more
Not among Grisham's best When Washington power broker Joel Backman gets a presidential pardon after serving six years of his twenty-year sentence in federal prison for compromising national security, he is given a new identity and sent to Italy. He undergoes an intensive language... more
Awful - but at least it is slow, too (ha) Boring. I hate books where the author is trying to share their great love of a place without giving the reader any reason to care. Grisham's foray into Italy, which he clearly loves, is just that. Perhaps he and Thomas Harris both vacationed their... more
Getting Older!!! News Flash: John Grisham, like all of us, is Getting Older.
And, like all of us who are getting older, his priorities are changing. If you've read his earlier books (and I'm sure you have), he has always hinted that the pace of modern life, especially... more
Grisham as Frommer's Having read all of John Grisham's work, I rate this as middle of the road at best. Any action or perceived "thriller" became engulfed in Grisham's Reader's Digest history of Italy. One might expect a typical page-turner from the king of legal thrillers,... more
Location, Location, Location I have read the following works of John Grisham: THE FIRM, THE PELICAN BRIEF, THE CLIENT, A TIME TO KILL, THE CHAMBER, THE RAINMAKER, THE RUNAWAY JURY, THE PARTNER, THE STREET LAWYER, THE TESTAMENT, THE BRETHREN, A PAINTED HOUSE, SKIPPING CHRISTMAS,... more
The eclectic Grisham The excellent writing style and expertly paced plot in THE BROKER reminded me of some of Jackson McCrae's writings-----his CHILDREN'S CORNER comes to mind, as does the writing in some of Elmore Leonard's book. Once again Grisham proves he is the master... more
A true dissapointment The author and the publisher should both hang their heads in shame. The plot is thin, predictable , and tired.
The majority of the book is devoted to an unlikable "hero" learing basic Italian.
I suppose the author had to deliver... more
Wait for the paperback in the library This book did nothing for me. The travels through Italy was the only part I kind of enjoyed. I never been there so those passages allowed my imagination to picture Joel's travels. That's about it.

Wonderful stoy---loved the Italian setting. This was a great read. I think the spy satelite story is a fascinating subject.
Grisham did a wonderful job with the setting too, I savored every meal, the food, the wine and the cappuccinos right along with Joel Backman.
It's... more
Slow moving for a thriller but interesting throughout. Nice unhurried character development and a perceptive insight into the more laid back European lifestyle. Action thriller fans won't like it, but for those who want a tale with less violence and a little more realism, this is it.
IMO Grisham... more
Totally Predictable I was really disappointed. I paid $16 for the hardcover and I feel cheated. After about 30 pages I could predict exactly how it would end, and I was right! I won't ruin it for you, but there is a common theme that started in "The Firm" that continues... more
Better times, books and stories, far away from this one Grisham waste a good plot and inmmerse himself in decorating Bologne. To much frosting with so few layers of cake.... The drama develops late in the book and with so many opportunities and characters it failed to bring the action on time, therefore, the... more
How disappointing...I wasted almost 30 dollars on this book. How disappointing...I wasted almost 30 dollars on this book when I could have waited for NO PLACE LIKE HOME by Mary Higgins Clark. Now she's an author that never lets you down, but now, on April 5, I won't be able to buy it. This book should be banned... more
Have I been here before? A montage of a fast lane american broker becoming acclimated with the Italian culture and taking time to learn about the finer things in life. The author's descriptions were masterful and the intrigue was passable, but I was left unsatisfied at the end.... more
Was disappointed I bought the hard cover book as I was expecting to read a good story. There are a lot of interesting descriptions of Bologna, Italy and that I enjoyed. BUT,the ending was stupid! There are several loose ends in the story and when I read the last page... more
Every Author Deserves a Tax-Deductible Italian Trip This book has high tech, spy satellites, international intrigue, a lawyer who practices little law and a good chase.
While the main character learns the history of northern Italy, savors the food and learns the language, not a lot happens.... more
Another one mailed in Several of our most readable authors are not working very hard any more. I would mention DeMille, Grisham, and Harris (he of the abominable HANNIBAL) as three of them. It would seem they have contracts to fill, and fill them they do, but the quality... more
Grisham is a better writer than this I'll have to admit that I was disappointed with John Grisham's lastest novel, The Broker. I purchased the book new but wish now I'd waited and picked it up at the library. I was hoping to read something close to the "The Firm" or one of his better books.... more
More Than Meets the Eye Far and wide, I have heard "This book should have been on the cutting room floor" and "If it doesn't move the plot forward, leave it out." While this is true in most cases, it is not true for The Broker. The extra information is, in my opinion, intended... more
