The '60s, the South, and being 14.
Wonderful book, just beautifully written and believably told through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl. The story is set in the south, in the 60s, just after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The tale is as much an accounting of the fear-based reaction of southerners to the forces of changing times as it is about the search for acceptance and love, the deep need for parental love: the love that deems you worthy enough to walk this planet. It is about finding the Goddess within, and bravery, and taking risks, and for standing up for what you know in your heart to be true. And, it's about bees and their fascinating lives and social order - how we're the same and how we're different.
