Excellent
"The Secret Life of Bees" is one of the best books I've read in months. Halfway through the book, I was already putting it on my list of the best books that I've read.
The story is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Lily who accidently shot her mother when she was four years old. Her father is very abusive to her and the only love she ever gets is from her African-American nanny, Rosaleen. When Rosaleen gets arrested for registering to vote, Lily breaks her out of jail and the book takes off.
They go to Tiburon, SC which is a location Lily found off the back of a Black Madonna that her mother owned. Lily and Rosaleen are taken in by three beekeeping sisters: August, June and May. There Lily learns about life, love, friendship, bees, the Black Madonna and even a few surprises about her mother.
The personalities of the people, especially Lily, August and May makes you become quite fond of them. Sue Monk Kidd's writing is glorious. I believe that every female twelve years old and up should read this book.
