Beautiful, rich writing, just not that engrossing I really appreciated the dripping imagery and detail in this book. However the story didn't captivate me. I enjoyed it, but when it was over, it was just over.

belongs on teenagers' reading list I received twice my daily ration of cliches and incredulous moments before I'd read one-third of the book...skimmed the rest and wasn't surprised by the hackneyed ending. Kidd's lovely descriptive prose was appreciated but not strong enough to give substance... more
A real page turner with southern flair I read this book at the recommendation of my Mother who is from N.C. and I loved it. I could hardly put it down and when it ended I was disappointed to have to leave the characters that I had gotten to know so well in the book. I found her writing to... more
The Secret if out---now you know If you enjoy the writing of Alice Walker or Jackson McCrae, then you're bound to like "Secret Life of Bees." Now I'm not the weepy type and I'm not into the goddess thing, but I read this book in a day and I was very impressed. It's true that some of... more
Our Decade's "Color Purple" Everyone feels the need to compare books to what we've already read. I don't know if that is fair, an insult, or a compliment. It is what we all do though. If the comparisons to yesteryear are to be believed and "My Fractured Life" (Rikki Lee... more
A beautiful story and a wonderful book I loved reading this book. It is a poignant story, and one that touched me. Sue Kidd is a fantastic writer, and I really got to care about the characters in the book. It's a great addition to literature, and a wonderful contribution to anyone's library.... more
Try This Wonderful Book For Yourself
Sue Monk Kidd, like young Lily a daughter of the South, is perhaps best known for her memoir The Dance of the Dissident Daughter. In this, her first novel, she's avoided those themes heretofore apparently part and parcel of southern literature... more
Masterful It took me a bit to get in to the book, but once I did it was hard to put down. Ms Monk-Kidd is quite the storyteller, to the point that the words are almost poetic. I expected something a bit different, but am very pleased with what I got. I have to... more
Southern Mothers The Secret Life of Bees is the debut novel by Sue Monk Kidd, a writer best known for her memoir, Dance of the Dissident Daughter. Kidd hails from South Carolina, so naturally, her novel is set in her home state. It tells the story of Lily, a fourteen-year-old... more
The Secret Life of Bees The secret's out. Sue Monk Kidd's debut novel The Secret Life of Bees is a hit. When my mother handed me a copy of the New York Times Bestseller, I laughed. Who wants to read about a bunch of bees, right? I flipped the book over and read, "The tale... more
I laughed, I cried, I died Absolutely loved this book. It goes in my list of books that all women should read (which I really should write out someday). If you're struggling with religion and identity like me, this will surely get you facing the right direction.

One to treasure My only regret with reading this book, was that I rushed the ending the first time. This was due to utter anticipation. A gem of a book! The beginning is slow- stick with it! I have talked to many with similar reactions. The beginning is important so... more
Excellent "The Secret Life of Bees" is one of the best books I've read in months. Halfway through the book, I was already putting it on my list of the best books that I've read.
The story is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Lily who accidently... more
A Soft Touch For a Pleasant Ride Perhaps not as much of a page-turner as "THE DA VINCI CODE" and not as flowery as "MIDDLESEX," but a finely written book that the whole family can feel comfortable reading. Like "MY FRACTURED LIFE," Sue Monk Kidd shows off a journalist's attention to... more
The '60s, the South, and being 14. Wonderful book, just beautifully written and believably told through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl. The story is set in the south, in the 60s, just after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The tale is as much an accounting of the fear-based reaction of... more

Amazing I had to read this book for a class and I was totally blown away with it. I couldn't put the book down! The characters are wonderful and interesting, especially Lily who is complex yet relatable. The story is engaging and memorable. This is a truly great... more
Sweet I have made it a point of reading inspirational books which can help me have a positive outlook to life. Though it reads like a non-fictional memoir, "The Secret Life of Bees" even though it is fictitious, has been tremendously helpful to me as an inspirational... more
