A book for every mother
I don't understand why all of the reviews for this book are so negative. Judith Warner did a great job of laying out the problems of all 21st century moms (yes, even those that are not white, affluent women who stay at home all day). She uses historical context to define the problems that we all suffer from today. If you are a mother and read this book and did NOT identify with the struggles discussed within, then you are an outlier.
When I found out that I was pregnant, I knew that my life was about to change forever. I knew that it was going to be hard (working full-time, a husband that didn't help out much), but what I did NOT know was that I wouldn't be able to handle it: not physically, emotionally or mentally.
And whether or not you agree with the sample of women Judith used in her book, I think that all of us agree that something needs to change before we all go completely insane. The same is true for every mom, regardless of her situation.
I too was a bit discouraged that Judith did not provide better solutions, but I don't think that she has any - NONE of us do. That is why we are stuck on this merry-go-round of stress. But if we can all agree that the majority of us lost something when we became mothers (and it's not just about sacraficing free time or sleep or a career!), then we can all stand up and fight for what is best for us!
Read this book, or don't read this book. It doesn't matter. Just remember that women have been challenging and changing their destiny's for centuries...and we can too!
