Mesmerizing
I purchased this book because I read such good reviews about it (although I had been somewhat reluctant to pick this particular book because of the subject matter). I was worried that there was no way I could enjoy a book about a hermaphrodite. I mean, really, A HERMAPHRODITE! I worried that it might end up being some trendy and discusting novel that lacked any real depth. I couldn't have been more wrong, or more pleased. Jeffrey Eugenides created a masterpiece with Middlesex: A Novel, and he kept me hooked from beginning to end.
The unwinding story of Cal is masterfully created. Eugenides actually seemed to unravel his story in a spiral, and it was reminiscent of that object he was revealing throughout the book: a double-helix. When I realized that circular writing pattern that unravelled like the disfunctional DNA his body contained I was stunned. It takes an amazing writer to create a story with a structure that reflects the subject matter.
I highly recommend this book. It will quickly become a classic.
