Readable, But Then Just Laughable
As a fan of Tom Wolfe, I tried to forget all the negative reviews this received before reading it. I bought the book the week it came out. Started reading it. Got through one chapter and put it aside for a couple months.
I finally picked it up again, so that I could either finish it or get rid of it. I ended up finishing it.
The first 2/3rds are quite readable. Fast paced (although I could have done without some of the five page sections of just the college lectures on evolution and such).
But then, an event happens that changes the tone of the book and pretty much ruins it. The characters change and you basically give up on it. You become as depressed reading it as the characters in the book appear to be.
Not only that, once it does finally get back on track, the book just ends. At over 700 pages, you never thought it should be longer, but since some storylines aren't resolved, you feel it needs to be.
So, it is readable, but not up to Wolfe's previous works.
