Nice try..but...
...for my two cents, let me just say this: I graduated from a large well-known, state university two years ago--so when I saw all the hype around this book, I took the plunge and bought it. My mom loves this writer; the years I was growing up, I recall seeing previous works by this author lying around the house at home. Anyway,I was very eager to see what this "social critic extraordinaire" had to say about university life today. There are some hilarious scenes and the dialogue, at times, is funny. So I loved the humor here. Charlotte, though, is not that believable. All in all, this book is long--and the story isn't much of one. I feel Mr. Wolfe is trying too hard. The characters seemed limp and two- dimensional.
With that said, I so preferred "Simon Lazarus" by M.A. Kirkwood. This gem of a novel involves an 18 year old at a contemporary college (takes place in the 90's?) but offers a more complex story. The inner musings and outer dialogue of Si and his college pals is absolutely hilarious and so on-the-mark--it's better than this, actually.
