Better than average business book
This is a very readable business book. Jim Collins and his crack research team studied a lot of companies and narrowed down to 11 the ones they thought were continually great. From these 11, they tried to find characteristics that were common to them, but not as common to their competitors. The results are enlightening and helpful, whether you are running a business or running your life.
My only gripes were these:
1. Very small sample size. Only 11 companies made the cut. I'm sure you can draw some lessons from these 11 companies, especially since all companies had to have the characteristic to make it in the book, but a bigger sample size would have been more credible. It would have been pretty research intensive though.
2. Hindsight bias. It's easy to read the book and say "Boy that was really stupid of X company". But we have the great benefit of hindsight. I guess this isn't so much a criticism of the book as a warning while you read it.
Overall, an easy and worthwhile read. Favorite part: the Stockdale Paradox.
