A look at what real Christianity is all about.
"God's Politics" is a book that should be read by believers and non-believers alike to see how the Christian message should encompasse all areas of life.
Wallis brilliantly tears apart the Right-wing claim that only those who follow a certain political agenda are "true Christians." As he points out, "When did Jesus become pro-rich, pro-war and only pro-America?" Wallis shows that the Bible has over 3,000 references to helping the poor and oppressed which the current crop of Right-wing evangelicals seem to ignore. (Unfortunatily many conservative Christians seem to only focus on abortion and the so-called "gay agenda" while ignoring issues of poverty and the enviroment.)
But Wallis has some harsh words for liberals too. He points out how many on the Left have an intense dislike for anything that seems even remotely religious. It seems to Wallis that the Left wants to drive religion from the public square. He also takes the Democratic party to task for having a stringent litmus test on abortion for anyone who wants the parties endorsement.
(Ironically, as he points out, while the Republican party is officially "pro-life" they have no problem with giving "pro-choice" Republican candidates an endorsement.)
So I encourage everyone, believer and non-believer, to read this book for it shows that not every evangelical is a Jerry Falwell clone and that all Bible-believing Christians aren't Right-wingers!
