Brilliant ; I cannot recommend this highly enough
This novel is every bit as powerful as Foer's EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED (2002), which is one of the five best novels I have ever read. The reader is drawn into Oskar's story immediately, into his heart, and into the hearts of those close to him -- his grandparents, his father and his mother (although we don't learn as much about the father, we learn enough to know that we love him, just as Oskar does)...
We learn all their stories, spun out in the most original prose; it's impossible to describe, so do yourself a favor, and read it. Foer's writing is exquisite, his characters vivid and full of life. You will be going on a very, very emotional journey with Oskar; if you have ever experienced a deep loss, prepare to experience it again. You'll come out on the other side feeling tempered, stronger, more alive, and more healed than before.
If I had to describe it with only one word, brilliant comes to mind first. Not self-consciously brilliant; truly brilliant. The author is not afraid to expose the deepest emotions in our *own* hearts. Brace yourself!
I cannot wait for his next novel, but I'll be reading this one many times, and I know that each time I'll experience something different. Good books are like that. If you love novels that make you think deeply, this is for you.
