FOOL'S GOLD
How the mighty fall. I have been waiting to read Eichenwald's Enron book for sometime and having just finished the thing, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I picked up an advance copy from my office and at first sight Conspiracy of Fools is a meaty book and quite a daunting read. However, don't be fooled as I found it very quick to get into and there were many times I was totally engrossed to the point where I felt Eichenwald had given me a privileged ringside seat in which to see at first hand both the criminal activities of Enron executives and the eventual cataclysmic collapse of Enron itself. Be warned, this is not a good book for corporate America, and I imagine it will be debated and studied on finance courses for years to come.
As it so happens, a couple of weeks back I finished reading a book called "Seven Floors High" which details the collapse of iaxis -a start-up telco founded by former WorldCom executives- and there were many times during Conspiracy of Fools that I found myself thinking back to the hilarious visual descriptions of a financial meltdown written so well in Goddard's book. If you've read 7FH you'll know what I mean, but I would without question recommend reading these two books one after the other. This would be a wise investment and a great return on your time!
