Verbose but Compelling Perhaps the Pulitzer deterred Diamond's editor from suggesting any trimming, but otherwise the book's a compelling read. As a Los Angelino who has lived in Montana year round for 14 of the past 17 years, I must say that Montana is not nearly as close to collapse as the first section of the book might suggest. Voters here recently voted down a proprosal for cyanide-leach mining. A plan to burn tires at a cement factory motivated hundreds of Gallatin Valley residents to protest. And the state just produced a movie to educate prospective millionaire ranch buyers on how to behave once they've bought in: don't padlock your gate against hunters, control your weeds, don't overgraze. Since I don't live in any of the other places Diamond writes about, obviously I can't comment on his positions in the rest of the book.
