New to Spenser? Do yourself this favor:
Do what I did when I discovered Spenser at the library (at age 12):
Go to the library, check out all of the first eleven books. Here they are, in order, from memory:
The Godwulf Manuscript
God Save the Child
Mortal Stakes
Promised Land
The Judas Goat
Looking for Rachel Wallace
Early Autumn
A Savage Place
Ceremony
The Widening Gyre
Valediction
Thank your personal deity for these eleven. And then do NOT read any of the others. They are reflex actions, increasing unimaginative, self-congratulatory and boring. If you persist, you'll learn what I did, the hard way: the magic is gone for good. And the person responsible for it, and apparently utterly oblivious to it, is Robert B. Parker.
